What is Autistic Masking? Sharon Kaye O'Connor, LCSW, autistic therapist explains.

What is autistic masking? In what ways do you mask your autistic traits?

What is Autistic Masking?

Autistic masking is when we hide or camouflage our autistic traits to blend in with non-autistic folks. We may do this completely unconsciously, without even realizing, or we may be constantly and consciously making subtle adjustments to our our outward behavior to avoid appearing different.

Here Are Some Forms of Autistic Masking:

-Making adjustments to our facial expressions, to either create facial expressions that other expect, or minimize our natural facial expressions

-Making adjustments to our speech patterns, to more closely match the speech patterns of those around us

-Making small talk even though it may not feel natural

-Making, or “faking” eye contact even though it may be uncomfortable. Some autistic folks will fake eye contact by looking at the bridge of the other person’s nose, eyelids, or another part of the face.

-Staying still or suppressing our natural need for movement or stimming

-Hiding our discomfort, distress or overwhelm

-Avoiding talking about a special interest, or preferred subject

Masking Can Delay Autism Diagnosis

As autistic masking can begin at an early age, masking can be a reason many autistic folks go undiagnosed and unidentified. Due to masking, some autistic folks don’t even know they are autistic until well into adulthood.

How Does Autistic Masking Affect Our Mental Health?

Autistic masking can be a useful survival adaptation in some situations, but masking can also consume a ton of our energy. Heavily masking over time can leave us feeling depleted, and even lead to Autistic Burnout.

Mindful Relationship To Masking

It can be helpful to simply be aware of the ways in which you may be masking. This can help you decide which elements of masking are most helpful for you, and which ones you might be able to let go. In therapy and coaching, we explore the ways in which you may be masking, masking’s impact on your mental health and overall energy levels, and if it may be helpful to make any changes to the ways in which you mask.
